Every year on the 14th of July in Carcassonne you can experience a real feast for the eyes when observing “La Cité Ablaze”. This event is attended every year by an average of seven hundred thousand spectators. It takes place around the banks of the Aude.
The fireworks continue for twenty five minutes or so with the best part coming near the end as you marvel at over twelve hundred combinations setting the city alight.
The event takes its cue from the towns history when on the 14th of August in the year 1898 a group called the “Cadets de Gascogne” arrived to the city. The group was composed of various famed individuals from the worlds of art, literature etc.
To mark their arrival in style, a huge event was organised involving parades, plays, music and more.
At the end of the night; the city was set alight in a display designed by Achille Rouquet. Thus it became an annual event upon the request of Mr Rouquet.
