The Aude Gate (Porte de l’Aude) is one of the most historic and atmospheric entrances into the medieval city of Carcassonne. Positioned on the western side of the fortress above the River Aude, it offers a far more dramatic and scenic approach than the main tourist entrance at Porte Narbonnaise.
The gate is reached by a steep medieval pathway climbing from the Pont Vieux and lower town towards the fortified walls of the Cité.

The visible rounded arch and sections of masonry still show characteristics linked to this earlier construction period.
The medieval approach
One of the most memorable aspects of the Aude Gate is the approach itself. Unlike the broader eastern entrance, the western route climbs sharply uphill through defensive bends and narrow passageways.
This route was intentionally designed to slow attackers and expose them to defensive fire from above. The steep ramp and sharp turns prevented enemies from advancing quickly or using large siege equipment effectively.

The Aude Gate also offers some of the best exterior views of Carcassonne’s fortifications. From the lower slopes and pathways, visitors can look up at the towering ramparts rising above the river valley.

Connection to the Pont Vieux
